7. How is biogas used?

Because of the ingredients like water vapour, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide and dirt particles, biogas can not be used directly after the extraction from the plant. However, after removing water vapour and carbon dioxide the biogas can be used like any clear natural gas.

Experience with refuelling tractors or compactors used in waste plants show that biogas could be used as an alternative fuel in vehicles. But due to corresponding legislation, combined heat and power plants are the most common utilisation. In this procedure, the biogas is used for the operation of a combustion engine which drives a generator for the production of electrical power. The hot water emerging from the cooling process as well as the exhausts can be used for heating purposes either directly at site or for a consumer nearby.

One other kind of using biogas is the feeding of gas into the gas network. Supplying biogas directly into the public natural gas grid requires biogas refinement to the quality of natural gas. Being as efficient as it is flexible, the biogas can be directed to the place where it is needed to be effectively used for generating electricity and heat.
